Helping someone move forward is not the hard part.
Knowing what they actually need before you try — that is, and most people skip this step entirely.
They offer encouragement when what’s needed is honesty. They issue a challenge when what’s needed is evidence. They remind someone of their potential when that person has already stopped believing the destination is worth reaching.
Good Intentions, wrong Read.
Do they still believe they can — or do they still believe it’s worth it? These are not the same question. And the difference matters more than most people realise.
When someone is carrying something the outside world never sees — still showing up, still functioning, still looking “okay” on the surface — what they need first is someone who notices.
When someone has stopped believing that any of it leads somewhere meaningful, encouragement will not make any difference. It just widens the distance between where they are and where they sense they should be. What works for one does nothing for the other.
Beneath the surface, there are two distinct questions a person is silently asking:
“Can I actually do this?” — That’s an efficacy question. It’s about whether they still trust themselves to act.
“Will it make any difference if I do?” — That’s an outcome question. It’s about whether they still trust the path to lead anywhere.
One person believes in the direction but has stopped believing in themselves. Another believes in themselves but has quietly stopped believing the direction matters.
These are completely different situations — and they need completely different responses. Try harder” addresses neither. That’s why it so often misses.
Agency isn’t willpower.
It isn’t about pushing through or summoning more effort from an already depleted place.
It’s the capacity to choose how you respond to what’s actually in front of you — honestly, within the constraints you genuinely face.
Sometimes that’s a new direction. Sometimes it’s asking for help. Sometimes it’s simply refusing to abandon yourself in the middle of difficulty. That’s not just agency. That’s authorship. You don’t choose the situation. You choose what you do with it.
But none of that becomes available until someone asks the right question first: Do they still believe they can—or do they still believe it’s worth it?
